Virginia, the home of the $3,000 traffic ticket

Since July 1st, Virginia officially began fining its bad drivers for outrageous amounts of money because of its lack of funds for its new road projects. They have enacted several new penalties ranging from $750 to $3000 that are expected to raise $65 million a year. One example of the state's new civil penalty is: "for going 20 mph over the speed limit, [the penalty] will be $1,050, plus $61 in court costs and a fine that is typically about $200."
I personally disagree with Virginia's strategy to raise money for its road projects. I feel that these new laws will undoubtedly create many financial problems for many of its citizens, which would be going against the purpose that a state government is supposed to serve. A state government is supposed to be a local authority that can make laws to ensure the best interests of its citizens in its specific region. And these laws will do nothing to help the people living in Virginia. I feel that Virginia should find a better way to fund its services.

i think that it is ridiculous that virginia would do that to fund their road projects. instead of penalizing the drivers by giving them tickets for large amounts of money they should find an alternative way to fund the money

Virginia is very much wrong for doing this. Not all drivers have the income to pay for these outrageous tickets. The state should find new ways of coming up with money to pay for their road projects. Also just because a driver is speeding doesn't mean that it is lethal, as long as their are not driving at excessively high speeds.

Well if you think about it, the money from the tickets goes straight back to the citizens because the road projects are intended for the citizens. Although I also think a $3000 ticket is way too much, I also believe in following the rules of the road. If someone is dumb enough to go 20mph over the speed limit when the state has gratiously given them a leeway of 5 mph slower and faster, then they SHOULD get fined. Why shouldn't someone get punished for reckless driving? A higher fine will also make the roads safer.

I believe that Virginia is on the right track in trying to stop reckless driving, but $3,000 fine is ridiculous. However, I can see Virginia's side of this argument. By doing so they are benefiting no matter what. A large fine will either decrease the amount of reckless drivers or contribute a healthy price in its road projects. In my opinion this should be only used as a last resort, because more important is that the people are treated fairly and Virginia should find a better way to fund its services, just as you said.

I too agree with Patrick Star (even though he's not a very good driver too), but i think its an outrage that drivers are being charged that kind of money for a traffic ticket. Thats an outrage that the State of Virginia would charge that for there one projects. Although new road would be nice, by the time they finish, there wont be any more drivers in the virgina because they would have revoked all ther licenses. They should find an alternate way to fund the new road projects instead of overcharging people.

I strongly disagree with this law being passed as well. I think that if they are trying to fund for the road projects, the more people would get caught because they want to raise more money. Also, I think that there are many other ways to get fund for these road projects rather than raising the tickets to 3000 dollars.
