Polygamist Claims His Rights Have Been Violated

A man from Utah named Gene Lee Cook is suing for his right to have many wives. Cook believes that his constitutional rights to privacy and intimate expression have been violated by the government. In the state of Utah, if a person is married it is actually a crime for them to live with another person whom he is not married to and be in a sexual relationship with them. He claims that what the Utah state legislature has done is changed the intimate sexual relationship into a crime. Some people believe that in order to obtain "eternal salvation" they must practice polygamy. For a hundred or more years, polygamists have been advocating their position for religious purposes.

I chose this article because I think polygamy is an interesting subject. I was surprised to learn that Utah considers it a crime to cheat on your spouse and I am curious what the punishments are for doing so. The reason why I don't believe polygamy is right is because I believe a relationship should be between two people because it is more meaningful. If a man has multiple wives he can play favorites and treat them differently. However, if a couple has a relationship they can get to know each other better and possibly find true love.

I'm siding with Utah on this case. The reason why is this: Like twilightgypsy i believe that a relationship should be between a man and a woman. not a man and five, ten, or in this case more than one woman. I mean, sure if you want to have many wives like... having concubines thats fine. But it appears that in the society that we live in today the concept of many wives is looked down upon anyways. If this man wants to have several wifes, more power to him, but i think that he should atleast have the decency to divorce the women that he's not interested in any longer so that they can get on with their lives and he, with his own.

I find it really strange that his "wives" would agree to this. In the American society, I believe that this man and his relationships would be greatly looked down upon. However, if he and his girlfriends/wives (??) would like to embarrass themselves, be looked down in society, and live this kind of life, then they should have their choice in the matter.

I believe that a relationship should just be committed to one couple. I am not saying it has to be man and woman. It could be man and man or woman to woman. Either way you should be committed to this one person.

I think that a man who is having more than one wife gives pain for the another wife(?). But the govenment even can't control a person's choice or marrige, and it will be harder in the future. So i think that people should choose whoever they want to love or be loved but not by others.

Omgeee! Was Utah once a Mormon state? Is this man a Mormon? If he is, then he should be allowed to have multiples wives. Not that I condone this type of action, but the state would be violating his Free Exercise Clause. I agree with everyone else that he should just stick with one wife instead of marrying some people he might not even love.

And to that above comment about why his "wives" would agree, if he is indeed Mormon, the women just have to deal with it. Although...did you know that women don't have the right to practice polygamy? Strange huh? Yes, indeedy....

One man does not deserve several women. He doesn't have any right whatsoever. If polygamy is allowed, woman marrying several men at the same time should be also used. Or else, this enforces the idea of racism.
