10-year-old arrested, handcuffed over scissors

A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school. School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons. Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon. “My daughter cried and cried,” said her mother, Rose Jackson. “She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh.”Police officers decided the girl hadn’t committed a crime and let her go. However, school officials suspended her for five days.

The 10 year old girl did violated the right not to bring any weapons to school. But shes just 10 years old. I believe that the girl shoud have not been arrested or even handcuffed just becasue she brought her own scissors. She did not hurt or threaten anyone.

Oh no! She brought a weapon! Let's handcuff her! That is so stupid. Yes she broke a policy, but she she's just 10! She probably doesn't even know what a policy is! They should just give her a spanking and let her go. Maybe a little time out. Arresting her is cruel and unusual punishment. If she were 15 and brought a knife to school, then yea she should be handcuffed and sent to jail. But an elementary student? Who isn't mentally unstable? Those people take things too seriously.

This is so wrong. If they are going to arrest the 10 year old, might as well arrest the all teachers that having a school supplies list containing scissors.

A 10 year old is highly unlikely to harm anyone. Tt is easily recognizible if she's just cutting paper and not harming anyone else.

Also, if she didn't know she had committed a crime, I think they should of sued for not reading the Miranda Rights :). Anyway, I wonder what state this was in.

Does anyone honestly think a ten year old girl would do any harm? She did not threaten anyone and she did not know what she was doing wrong. The girl did not have any intentions of causing any danger or chaos. Thus, arresting a 10 year old girl and HANDCUFFING her, seems too harsh and unreasonable.

The girl is ten years old... how should she know the severity of bring SCISSORS to school? I believe that the scissors should have simply been confiscated and a warning should have been issued toher, but arresting her and suspending her for five days? these two punishments were to extreme and the school should appoligize and pay damages, because the situation was mishandled.

Whether the girl is 5, 10, 17 or 30 years old, for someone to get arrested for such a ridiculous reason for bringing in scissors to school is outrageous. Last time i checked, scissors are a basic school supply, and if the prosecutors consider this an act of bringing in a weapon, then they might as well say bringing in a pencil is a crime too.
The scissors should have just been taken away rather than made into a huge deal and bring the poor girl to tears.

It's still disturbing to hear that she was handcuffed and taken to police department, but suspension? School even uses scissors and it's not reasonable that she is being arrested. How ridiculous!

she is 10 years old and that has to be the stupidest thing to arrest someone over. especially that shes 10 and they are sissors. the school could have at least taken them away its not like it was a knife.

Wow, that has got to be one of the most ridiculous stories ive heard. Shes a 10 year old bring scissors to school, maybe she was gonna do some cutting in class? Thats ridiculous, if anything sh eshould ahve been givin a warning and gotten the scissors taken away form her. a full scale arrest is not necessary
